Medical Interpretation English-Spanish
Description:This course is designed to prepare students and community professionals to successfully interact with Spanish-speaking patients. The course is ideal for all those who are working or wishing to work as interpreters in healthcare settings but who have not had any formal training as health professionals. It is also ideal for students in the Nursing program, health professionals, medical assistants, athletic trainers, nurses, doctors, paramedics, pharmacy technicians, clinicians, etc. Language is developed in the context of specific communicative tasks, such as taking medical information, counseling and giving instructions to patients. Students will learn specific vocabulary for the Health Professions. Interpretation skills are developed by 1) using the new vocabulary 2) practicing real-life situations and 3) discussing how to improve different interpreting scenarios. Fluency in both Spanish and English are strongly recommended. Portions of instruction may be offered online; may also be offered fully online.
Recommended Preparation:SPAN 1S (or SPAN 1SA) OR SPAN 4 (or SPAN 2B) OR Students should be heritage speakers of Spanish or other linguistically qualified students. Fluency in both English and Spanish is strongly recommended.

 ONLINE COURSE (LIVE ONLINE CLASS MEETINGS): This online course requires students to attend live online class sessions during the scheduled class time. Students shall meet online during the specific times shown above for online class activities plus dedicate additional time for studying and homework. This online class is taught using CANVAS and VIDEO CONFERENCING (camera-on requirement). Click on the Lobo Apps link on the MPC website to access Canvas, your MPC e-mail, and other online tools. Visit the Canvas Help Desk for help accessing your online course. Students must have regular access to a computer with high-speed Internet, be familiar with using the Internet, and have speakers and a working video camera with microphone to participate. Students will be required to keep cameras on during class sessions in order to effectively participate in course activities. This is a Zero-Textbook-Cost (ZTC) course. Any required course content or materials are freely available online or will be provided by the College at no cost to students.
